27 is a residency and project programme based in Glasgow. It was initiated my myself and Ross Hamilton Frew. We invite art practitioners to come and live with us for a period of time during this time the arts practitioner will realise a project with us. We are interested in fostering stronger links between Scandinavia and Scotland and the mobility of Scottish art practioners in and around Scotland. Our first resident was curator Alexandra Ross April/May 2012. We are hoping to have our second resident late October.

An international multi-media exhibition curated by Breon Gilleran and Sarah Laing featuring artists from France, Finland, Germany, Scotland and The United States:

While we live in a world characterized by instantaneous transaction, global communication and interdependent economies, we often fail to recognize cultural similarities and lack empathy for necessary differences. Curated by Breon Gilleran (Baltimore, MD) and Sarah Laing (Lanarkshire, Scotland), this mixed media exhibition promotes affiliations both internationally and locally. The curators seek engagement with artists and audiences in the greater Baltimore/Washington area in a context that promotes the exchange of ideas and opportunities on a global level. With such easy international communication via skype and facebook, we tend to overlook the obvious needs to connect on a more personal and professional level. Go West seeks to begin to bridge that gap between what’s happening here in our fair city, and what’s happening worldwide. Artists are often the catylist for moving society forward, so with this exhibition, we hope to share what’s happening “East of Here” with what’s happening “West of There”.

Continuous Curatorial Conversations Dinner

27s inaugural resident, Alexandra Ross, stayed with 27 during the GI Festival 2012. As part of her current doctoral research Alexandra and 27 hosted a dinner focussed on the issues surrounding hospitality and the role of the curator. The event was held within a gallery setting surrounded by an installation of selected recordings of conversations relating to the GI Festival and Alexandra’s research. Click here to see more photos.

On Paper 17/02/12 - 22/02/12

I curated a group exhibition in an empty shop which explored the materiality of paper. The exhibition featured a mixture of commissioned and existing works which explored how artists use this malleable material from line drawings, tracings, printed matter, sculptures to a printing device.The artists who were involved in the exhibition were Sarah Laing, Callum Monteith, Chris Hugh Mackenzie, Ewan Manson, Jonathan Owen, Pete Fleming, Ross Hamilton Frew, Erik Smith and Rachel Barron. Thank you to Susan Castillo photography for taking the install shots. On Paper was the launch event to my offshoot project 27 which is a residency and project programme based in Dennistoun, Glasgow.
